This week story is about Ju Garib, one of our blog columnists, which features her own words how he decided to leave the security of a successful career in the corporate world for an adventure without expectation of end.
When I received the invitation to write in The Sun Jar, I was very happy. But I confess that the request to tell my story in the first text is a great challenge. After all, why is it so difficult to talk about ourselves? For a long time I thought my story was very dull. Without any special event, no great tragedy or eccentric episode. Gradually I was accepting me. I learned to appreciate the journey that brought me here. So without paranoia and judgments, that is my story:
I’m 25 and still live with my parents in São Paulo. In short, I’m moving to Australia with my boyfriend. A journey with no start date and expected end. Not have a very clear goal. Some think it is a leak, I’d rather say it’s an adventure. Let us play and see where all this will lead us.
And what stories are behind this change? It started when I realized that my whole life I’ve always done what others said they would bring happiness: I was a good student in school, I entered really early in University, majored in management at USP – a very competitive course in Brazil. I was one of the best students and started interning at one of the best companies in the country. I was honored and was doing very well at work. Soon I would be promoted.
That’s when I realized that everything that ideally should bring me happiness wasn’t working for me. Deep down, I felt empty. I started looking to things that I liked doing. I started getting off work early to make impromptu lessons, including clown’s nose and everything related to it. During my vacation, I managed to graduate as a yoga teacher, a passion that suddenly arose in my life. I wanted to watch movies that nobody really knew about. Read books on unusual topics. I was looking for my authenticity. These small changes started adding up until I realized I was more sure of who I am and who I wanna be. I quit my job. I want to explore the world, discover new things. I’m going in search of an interesting story to tell.
To end, I will share a text fragment of the writer Martha Medeiros:
“People that have an interesting life don´t make turns… They swap their cities, feel at home anywhere, invest in projects without warranty. They are interested in people who are the opposite of them. They quit their jobs without having another job in sight, accept an invitation to do what they had never done before, are willing to change their favorite color or favorite dish, start from the begining numerous times. They don´t get frightened by the time passing by, climb on stage, cut their hair, do crazy things for love and buy one-way tickets …”
